Variety Show transforms the Civic "loudly, lustily and lovingly"
by Patti Harris
Wearing tuxedo tails and tights, Emcee Michelle Colopy, our Mistress of Ceremonies, promised the capacity audience at the 18th Annual Womyn's Variety Show that the "L" word would be spoken often-"'loudly, lustily and lovingly."' Sponsored by Oven Productions, the event felt a bit like Cleveland's rendition of the Michigan Women's Festival as we learned that the audience of 1,025 women were in attendance rom as nearby as Columbus and Youngstown and as far away as California and Newfoundland. I expect "See you at the Civic" bumper stickers will be sprouting up on lesbian vehicles everywhere!
Act I opened with the 8-member Lesbian Sound Machine, followed by vocalist Penny Rachelle, mid-eastern dancers, Meena & Elsa, pianist Diane Hobus and the Violet Flames' own Purple Pyros. The Fly Girls' "Never gonna get it" demonstrated that the crowd did get it (or certainly wanted to!). The stage then filled with the Windsong Womyn's Ensemble, an introduction to the womyn of Oven Productions (with special recognition given to Brynna Fish) followed by Shari Hutchinson soundly proving that Karaoke does pay off, and Martin and McHugh's "I think we're NOT alone." Hard Hatted Women concluded Act I, leaving me wishing we could have tried out the porta-jane on a certain West-side bigot.
Intermission was too short, as the hallways leading to and from the Great Hall
were filled with old friends and many we'd like to have added to the ranks of new friends.
And if you stayed for the party following the show, perhaps Cupid had a few more arrows to pull from her quiver.
Act II opened with the Moral Choral (didn't I see your mother up there?), comedienne Judith's delightful News from the Cusp, Emcee Michelle's "Stuff like that there" and Meena's "Deer Dance."
I must stop and regain my composure before mentioning Mistress Marika & Company's "Erotica" and Clitty Cat Club's performances as the Chronicle only has an "R" rating. The squirt bottle used to cool off the audience was terribly insufficient. Perhaps next year we'll engage the Civic's overhead sprinkler system. I guarantee you that the overheated bodies were not solely the fault of the auditorium's climate-control coordinator.
Slap Leather showed great energy and coordination, leaving me determined to learn line dancing, followed by R.U.N.'s original East Side Girls melody. Master percussionist Linda Thomas-Jones orchestrated the finale with "Transitions and Transformations" as the stage filled with percussionists and the immense power of diversity. What a tremendously moving conclusion to a tremendously entertaining evening!.

Thieves break into Center, take new laser printer
by Martha Pontoni
Sometime in the early morning hours of February 12, the Lesbian and Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland was broken into and their new laser printer valued at $1,500 was stolen.
Center employee Christine Hann discovered the break-in when she came to work that day. The front glass door was kicked in and some debris was out on the street. The only item missing at press time was a newly-donated HP LaserJet 111P.
Executive Director Leigh Robertson said she was glad that no one was hurt but is really "angry and upset that the Center was violated." The Center is not insured for theft because of the high crime rate of the
area and the layout of the building. Robertson said that insurance might be possible if the Center had a security system.
Hann and Robertson reported that the Cleveland Police Department responded within 30 minutes of their call and were very helpful. There is no evidence at this time that the break-in was a homophobic act. The police believe the intruder was just looking for something to sell for drugs.
Robertson was thrilled at the response to the incident. "Everyone was so helpful. It really felt like community," she said.
If you are interested in helping the Center purchase a new printer and a security system please contact Leigh Robertson at 522-1999 or send your donations to P.O. Box 6177, Cleveland, OH 44101.
